COPYWRITING FOR PRINT, DIGITAL AND SEO

I've got the write stuff for you and your product/business/shiny new thing!

What you have to share with the World is amazing - but how do you express that and get the word out on the right channels, to the right audience?

Copywriting is the art of weaving together engaging, informative and compelling words to sell an idea, service or product.

SEO copywriting supercharges this message for the digital age.

Copywriting for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is about putting the right words in the right places to ensure that it's actually seen and not buried somewhere on page 10 of the search results. We want your ideas front and center... My job is making certain your 'people' - your customers or network - can find you on the internet.

Everyone can indeed write, and everyone can communicate – but it takes experience and training to write copy strategically with SEO as a priority.

With over 20 years of experience in successfully copywriting and content planning for businesses both big and small, I have the hands-on knowledge that your business needs.

THE WRITE STUFF

Steps to success

Whether working freelance or in-house, in my copywriting process I collaborate with advertising agencies and businesses of all sizes to create compelling copy and content for their sales and marketing collateral.

To help you grasp my working process, I’ve outlined a general approach detailing how I would tackle your project, regardless of its nature.

STEP 1

Nailing down the scope

I charge a flat fee for each project, which means we need to nail down the exact scope of work upfront. To do this, I’ll likely ask you a few questions.

Before diving into your freelance copywriting project, I’ll send you a brief to fill out, covering:

• Is the copy for a website, brochure, speech, radio/video script, or press release?

• How many pages of copy do you need?

• What types of pages are they? (Home, Services, About Us, etc.)

• How much content have you prepared yourself?

• Do you have a specific length in mind, or are you open to my recommendations?

For an SEO review, I’ll focus on technical setup, your competitors, and chosen keywords. When it comes to Information Architecture (IA), we’ll discuss user types, goals, web strategies, and related technical details.

In short, I ask plenty of questions to ensure my proposal is spot on. I usually prefer to do this over the phone or via email, but if you prefer a face-to-face meeting, I’ll let you know my next available time.

STEP 2

My solution

Depending on the size of the project I’ll send you a quotation or proposal outlining the details of the job with comprehensive pricing that includes rounds of amends, meetings and any incidentals.

I tend to present my proposal in a ‘check list’ style, so you can pick and choose elements.

STEP 3

30% Payment upfront

I charge 30% up front. This is non-negotiable. If the project value is below $1000 I charge 100% up front.

STEP 4

Deliverables and deadlines

Once I give you a delivery date, I stick to it. Turnaround times vary based on the material you provide, your approval speed, and the amount of content I’m producing.

I often get booked up to a month in advance, so the sooner you can brief me, approve my proposal, and send the initial 30% payment, the better!

I can usually squeeze in small jobs here and there. I’ll do my best to meet your deadlines.

But don’t worry, my years of experience have taught me how to deliver quickly.

STEP 5

Briefing

When we reach the briefing stage, I find it’s great to meet up for coffee and a slice of cake. But if you prefer to handle the briefing remotely - over phone, teams/zoom meeting or via email, that works too.

I’ll ask you more questions about your project, covering areas like:

• Target audience – their needs and desires

• Marketing objectives

• Your brand’s “voice” and personality

We’ll also dive into your specific needs and wants for the project.

Once we cover these and I have the following, I can get started:

• Signed proposal or quote

• Your 30% up-front payment

• Any supporting material or assets. If you can send me existing copy that you love, this gives me a great base to work from.

STEP 6

Drafts and amendments

For copywriting or IA projects, I’ll typically provide three versions of your documents: the first draft, the second draft, and the final draft. This allows for two rounds of revisions. Any additional rounds will be billed at an hourly rate. All of this will be clearly outlined in your proposal.

For copywriting edits, I prefer to use track changes and comments. This method is more efficient than handling separate amendment briefs and phone discussions.

STEP 7

Feedback and reviews

At the beginning, we’ll agree on a timeline for you to review and approve the materials I provide.

Keep in mind that it’s your project, so you set the schedule (within reason!).

Reviewing copy and SEO documents can be time-consuming, requiring a line-by-line check to ensure they meet the brief.

The more effort we both invest, the better the final product will be.

STEP 8

Final payment

When the final version of your project has been delivered I’ll invoice you the final 70% of my fee. My payment terms are seven days.

STEP 9

Happy days

At the end of the project, we should both be delighted. I ask all my clients for testimonials to showcase on my website, as there’s no better endorsement than a positive recommendation.
